How to decorate the perfect porch for fall

One of the best things about fall is the cozy, cool evening weather, perfect for spending hours on your porch curled up while reading or watching your kids play in the yard. Creating the perfect fall porch involves incorporating cozy and seasonal elements that capture the spirit of autumn. Here is a guide to help you curate the perfect decor for the fall season.

It’s always best to start with a clean and fresh canvas, so start by cleaning your porch and sweeping away any dirt or debris that has built up over the summer. A good deep clean shouldn’t be saved for only spring cleaning!

Any makeover should always begin with choosing your color palette! Opt for warm and inviting colors, drawing inspiration from fallen leaves. Think about rich hues like deep oranges, burgundies, rustic browns, and golden yellows.

The foundation for your porch should be the furniture. When I think about cool fall nights spent on the porch, I always think about the comforting sway of a rocking chair. Our Hilford Poly Resin Indoor/Outdoor Rocking Chair with Side Table is a classically composed rocking chair and side table set constructed from ultra-durable poly resin and easy to clean. It comes in black, gray, teal, and white, all perfect for a fall color palette.

Another more modern or creative idea for seating is a hanging egg chair. These are super cozy and would be the perfect seat to cuddle up in and sway in the fall breeze with a blanket and a coffee. Our Riley Foldable Woven Hanging Egg Chair in Natural would fit beautifully in our desired color palette. And since the cushions are a soft cream color, drape cozy fall-themed throw blankets over the chairs to add comfort and warmth to the space. You could also swap out your regular outdoor pillows for ones with fall-inspired patterns and colors.

The next step is to decorate your front door! Hang a fall-themed wreath on your front door; use materials like dried leaves, pinecones, berries, and even mini pumpkins to DIY your wreath. You can also place a seasonal doormat that features fall motifs or quotes. It’s a great way to welcome guests and set the tone.

Another fun way to decorate is to arrange a mix of pumpkins and gourds of different sizes, shapes, and colors on your porch steps, in planters, or on a side table. You could also mix it up and create a pumpkin stack by placing larger pumpkins at the base and smaller ones on top. This adds visual interest and height to your decor. And if you are worried about the pumpkins rotting before the season is over, you could use fake pumpkins!

Floral arrangements are also a great way to fill space between porch decorations or spruce up your space for fall! Chrysanthemums (mums) are quintessential fall flowers. Plant them in pots or planters and place them around your porch. Consider adding other fall blooms like marigolds, sunflowers, and pansies to your arrangements.

The easiest way to bring some warmth to your spaces is by adding mood lighting! Place lanterns or candle holders with flameless LED candles on your porch to add a warm glow and create a cozy ambiance. If you choose to use real candles, opt for scents like cinnamon, apple, pumpkin spice, or vanilla to enhance the fall atmosphere.

You could also use string or fairy lights to add a whimsical touch. Hang string lights along railings, walls, or outdoor plants to create a magical and inviting atmosphere during evening hours. Pro-tip: use an outlet timer plug-in to schedule your lights to turn on automatically when the sun goes down.

For a more rustic touch, hang or display a chalkboard (Magda Weathered Wall Mount Magnetic Chalkboard Sign) or wooden sign with a fall-themed message or quote. This can be a focal point of your décor. And something you can change throughout the season to keep things interesting!

And if you want to continue the fall vibes on your back patio, you can feature our Aries 19.5" Portable Finished Steel Smokeless Wood Burning Outdoor Firepit with Waterproof Cover. A firepit in the fall is a delightful addition to any outdoor space. As the crisp autumn air sets in and leaves begin to change color, gathering around a firepit provides warmth and comfort, making it the perfect centerpiece for cozy gatherings with family and friends. Whether it's roasting marshmallows, sharing stories, or simply basking in the comforting heat, a firepit fosters a sense of togetherness and nostalgia, making it a must-have for creating cherished fall memories.

Remember, the key is to create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere that captures the essence of fall. Feel free to get creative and personalize the decorations according to your style and preferences.
